Mary Colby

Mary Colby of Riverhead died March 3 at the Westhampton Care Center. She was 98.

She was born Aug. 2, 1912, in Dupont, Pa., to Johann and Maria Seftic and was a high school graduate. She married Leon Newton Colby Jr. and was a homemaker for most of her adult life, living for over 50 years on the North Fork, first in Aquebogue and later in Riverhead.

She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church of Riverhead, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. According to family, Ms. Colby loved to read and enjoyed memorizing long verses of poetry.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Cobas of Riverhead; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and, in 1994, by her son, Scott.

Arrangements are in the care of Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 9, at 10:45 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery. Interment will follow at the cemetery.
