Marie E. Lipetz

Former Riverhead resident Marie E. Lipetz, widow of state Supreme Court Justice Gordon M. Lipetz, died Feb. 16 at her home in Pompano Beach, Fla., after a brief illness. She was 98.

Born Marie Juliet Ehrlich in Greenville, Miss., on Feb. 11, 1913, she graduated from Greenville High School and the Jackson Business School in Mississippi.

She met Gordon Lipetz, a young attorney, in 1937, while working at C.W. Clark Publishing in New York. They married in 1938 and lived in Riverhead, where Mr. Lipetz would practice law for many years, before moving to Southampton.

Ms. Lipetz volunteered for the March of Dimes, the Red Cross and Southampton Hospital. She helped with Rogers Memorial Library’s annual designer showhouse fundraiser and was active with the Southampton Colonial Society. According to family, she was an ardent and expert duplicate bridge player, earning more than 1,000 tournament master points and numerous trophies.

In addition to her husband, who died in 1994, Ms. Lipetz was predeceased in 1986 by her daughter Carol Ann Woessner. She is survived by her son, Ronald, of Riverhead, and daughter Jean Doucette of Boston; and two grandsons.

Private services were held in Pompano Beach.
