Art Beat: Walt Whitman celebration, two calls for artists
• A celebration of Walt Whitman’s life and art will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. Mel Mendelssohn leads “Walt Whitman: Songs of the People,” which incorporates Whitman’s poetry and autobiographical reflections with music of his time as well as contemporary musical settings of his work. The writer was a Long Island native.
Mr. Mendelssohn will be joined by Dee Laveglia (music director and keyboard), Jere Jacob and Rebekah White.

• East End Arts Council and Peconic Landing have put out a call for artists for the second annual juried Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition planned for June 11 to Oct. 1 at Brecknock Hall in Greenport.
Jurors include Richard Mizdal, Dr. Charles Riley II and Marianne Weil; Matko Tomicic of the Longhouse Reserve sits on the honorary committee. Accepted artists will receive a stipend and a one-year membership to the arts council.

• Studio East Gallery in Greenport will hold an opening reception for an exhibit of watercolors by featured member artist Andy Masino and a ‘Floral & Automobiles Show’ by various artists at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9. The Ramblers will provide music. The show will continue through May 7.
Mr. Masino is a longtime member of Studio East; a press release calls his work “as diverse as society,” ranging from the expressive to the abstract.
• Singer/songwriter Hugh Prestwood of Greenport gives his annual concert at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport at 7 p.m. Friday, April 8. The program will include songs from his latest CDs.
Mr. Prestwood is a staff songwriter for BMG Music; he’s won an Emmy and earned three Grammy nominations among other awards. His songs have been interpreted by many well-known recording artists, including Randy Travis, Trisha Yearwood, Alison Krauss and James Taylor.
• Call for artists: Old Town Art and Crafts Guild in Cutchogue is seeking artists for the second annual “Spring Awakenings,” a juried art competition and sale that will open with a reception Friday, April 15. The show will continue on April 16, 17, 22 and 23. The juror is Rob White of New Suffolk.
Categories include fine art, photography and mixed media. The fee is $15 per entry. Artwork can be dropped off Thursday, April 14, 4 to 7 p.m., and Friday, April 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For details and an application, visit oldtownguild.com or e-mail [email protected].
