Older couple hurt in Calverton wreck

A man and woman were taken to area hospitals after a two-car crash on Route 25 in Calverton Tuesday, police said.

Police said an older couple was together in a gray Hyundai sedan when the male driver pulled out of a Citgo station and into the path of an eastbound Chevy pickup truck. The pickup T-boned the smaller car.

The man was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center and the woman was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, Riverhead Police said.

The driver of the Chevy was not seriously hurt in the 4:15 p.m. wreck just west of Edwards Avenue, police said, although the airbag deployed. He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, Riverhead ambulance workers said..

The truck’s front end was severely damaged in the crash, as was two of the car’s driver’s side panels.

Firefighters had to remove the Hyundai’s driver’s door to remove one of the occupants.

Riverhead and Wading River firefighters aided in the rescue.
