Flanders: Highway cleanup scheduled

Hello, friends and neighbors. Here is some news that will make some parents cringe and most children smile. There are approximately 45 days left of school. I just counted the days, and after I picked myself up off the floor I counted again, and I was right. There are even fewer days left for high school and middle school students due to finals. My son, who is a senior, probably thought this day would never come. I’ve always told my kids to enjoy school while they can. This is the only time in their life when their only responsibility is to attend, learn new things and have fun.

I hope you had a chance to see the Riverhead Blue Masques’ performance of “Once Upon a Mattress.” The last shows were this past weekend. Congratulations to all the students and the adults, who put 110 percent time and effort in. It was fabulous!

The Flanders Village Historical Society will conduct its first-ever Adopt a Highway cleanup of our old Main Street (Flanders Road) on Sunday, April 17. The cleanup will be held in conjunction with The Great East End Cleanup, which has been scheduled for April 16 and 17. Volunteers will begin on the 17th at 9 a.m. on the grounds of the Blue Barn and plan to end with an early-afternoon barbecue back at the barn. Anyone who can participate should sign up at the next Board of Trustees meeting, which is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the community center. T-shirts will also be sold at the meeting to wear to the cleanup. Your support is needed to make their first cleanup a success and to show everyone how much the historical society and all the residents care about their community.

Calvary Baptist Church will be holding a community Easter celebration on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will include an egg hunt, a theater piece, music, food and more. Lunch will be provided. This free event is open to the entire community. All activities will take place at the church on 515 Riverleigh Ave., Riverhead. For more info, call 727-4112 or email [email protected].

Happy 16th birthday to Spencer Shea, who celebrated on April 13, from Mom, Dad, Luke, Tyler, Ryan, and all your family and friends who love you so much and are so happy that you are here to celebrate this very special birthday. Sixteen is such a milestone. We hope you enjoyed your day!

Well, folks, that is all for this week. Thanks to all who sent me news to share with the community. I truly appreciate the help. After all, this is your column. My contact info is above if there’s anything you’d like for me to write about. Enjoy your weekend, enjoy the week’s vacation the students will have next week, and Happy Passover to all my friends and neighbors who celebrate. Please drive safely and slowly on our roads. Take care.
