Shoreham-Wading River: St. Mark’s CYO boys basketball team named LI CYO Class B champs!

Here’s a terrific idea. Suffolk County Community College held its very first “Take the Cake” cake-decorating contest at the college’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center in Riverhead. The contest was open to students enrolled in the center’s pastry and baking arts program. The contest included competitions in two categories: three-layer cake and two-tier rolled fondant cake, and the first place trophy for the three-layer cake went to Wading River resident Janel Meyer. Congratulations, Janel!

Another local group recently took the cake, too, and a big one. Members of the boys’ CYO basketball team at St. Mark’s Church in Shoreham are the Long Island CYO Basketball Class B champs! They beat the talented Long Beach team that had a record of 14-0. It was a very exciting game and when the St. Mark’s boys were behind, they really kept their cool and made clutch shots under enormous pressure. Congratulations to coaches Brian Sheehan and Mike Julian and to all the boys who absolutely took the cake with their 48-40 win: Christopher Sheehan, Chris Gray, Kyle Higgins, Tanner Bardes, Jalen Wright, Steven Pirani, Joey Miller, Ryan Heeter, Danny Cassidy, Thomas Houlihan, Brian Morrell, Dean Stalzer, Kevin Cutinella and team captain Matty Julian.

The next stop for St. Mark’s is to face the winner of the Brooklyn/Queens Division for the NYC/LI championship. Good luck!

Playing on sports teams is exciting and a valuable part of any student’s school experience, but you have to be ready and in shape. Sports physicals for the 2011-2012 school year will be given in the health office on the following days: May 16, from noon to 2 p.m.; May 17, 8 to 10 a.m.; May 19, 8 to 10 a.m.; and May 20, noon to 2 p.m. Any student needing a physical for working papers or a required 10th-grade physical is also welcome. Students must sign up in the health office. Any questions, call Mrs. Johnson at 821-8170.

Let’s hope that we’ll soon be experiencing a spring as beautiful as Janel’s cake and uplifting as the St. Mark’s basketball team’s victory.

So long until we meet again here next week.
