Art Beat: student art at SCCC; street painters sought

• The SCCC Eastern Campus Student Art Exhibit opens today, April 14, at Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery in Northampton. The show includes works created by Eastern Campus students studying drawing, life drawing, painting, two-dimensional design, color and art appreciation. An opening reception is planned for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 28. The exhibit continues through May 14. Call 548-2536.

• Old Town Art and Crafts Guild in Cutch­ogue will hold an Ability Fair, featuring work by local artists with developmental disabilities, on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair is held in conjunction with  the guild’s juried ‘Spring Awakenings’ competition and exhibition, which will run from April 16 to 23. The “Spring Awakenings” juror is Rob White of New Suffolk.

An opening reception for both exhibits will be held Friday, April 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. Call 298-8416.

• The East End Arts Council is seeking artists to participate in the 15th annual ‘Community Mosaic’ Street Painting Festival on Sunday, May 29, noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Riverhead. Madonnari artists (street painters) over age 14, of all skill levels, are invited to register; materials will be provided. Volunteer face painters also are sought; some experience is required.

Professional artists and craftspeople may apply to participate in the fine art, crafts and homemade goods sale; the fee is $50 for members and $75 for nonmembers.

The rain date is Monday, May 30, 2 to 5 p.m.
