Cops: Riverhead man led police on chase in stolen car

A Riverhead man was arrested early Saturday morning after he led police on a chase through Riverside in a stolen car before crashing the vehicle in an embankment, Southampton Town Police said.

Police said 30-year-old Patrick Earnest Gray was spotted driving the stolen car on County Road 94 in Riverside about 1:30 a.m. Mr. Gray tried to escape police and began driving toward the Long Island Expressway, but hit an embankment and then a road sign near the intersection with Pinehurst Boulevard in Calverton.

The vehicle was reported stolen from the Valero gas station on Peconic Avenue in Riverside, just one hour before. Police did not say what kind of vehicle Mr. Gray was driving.

Mr. Gray was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawfully fleeing police. He was taken to Southampton Town Police headquarters and held overnight for an appearance in Southampton Town Justice Court.
