A fixture in the heart of Riverhead’s Polish Town since 1929, The Birchwood has a cozy, old pub feel. The establishment is loaded with character, sporting its original tin ceiling, an old-fashioned brass cash register behind the bar, red and white checkered tablecloths, stained glass, sports memorabilia and antiques. The bar offers happy hour specials from noon to 6 p.m. daily (except Thursday), featuring two-fers on domestic and imported beers, as well as wine and top-shelf and premium drinks. Wednesday is Guys’ Night Out, with two appetizers for $10 and choices including chili skins, sesame chicken tidbits, nachos supreme, mini beef tacos and baked clams. Thursday is ladies’ night, featuring a buy one, get one for half price dinners.
Through nearly 80 years and four owners, The Birchwood has maintained its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, said current owner Jimmy Loo. “This is the local restaurant where everybody knows your name and you get personalized, friendly service,” Mr. Loo said. Patrons can expect great food as well as great service. The restaurant offers five Polish entrées daily, abundant salads like the Santa Fe, with avocado, tomato, corn, pepper jack cheese, fried onions and mesclun, and sandwiches including the popular cajun chicken sandwich.
The dining room can seat about 100 and there is a separate catering hall. Spectacular food, elegant surroundings and world-class service are the hallmark of each and every wedding celebrated in the Champagne Room.
