William J. Hummel Jr.

Riverhead resident William J. Hummel Jr. died May 5 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 71.

He was born Sept. 5, 1939, in Brooklyn to Florence (Masters) and William J. Hummel. He attended Brooklyn College for one year and served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1962. He married Diane Huber in Queens on May 12, 1962.

He worked as a computer technician at Equitable Life Insurance Co. in Manhattan. According to family members, he loved to travel and enjoyed bowling.

Mr. Hummel is survived by his wife; his sons, Keith, of Harrison, N.Y., Scott, of Medford, and Brian, of South Carolina; his sister, Barbara Gay; and eight grandchildren.

Visiting hours took place May 7 and 8 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service was held May 9 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
