Riverhead: Memorial Day looming

Kathy Berezny

First Baptist Church of Riverhead held its 55th annual Women’s Day Service on May 15. The celebration included a dance performed by Kim Stephens and songs of praise sung by the church’s choir along with members and guests. All the women were dressed in white and wore colorful silk scarves symbolizing the month in which they were born. They called themselves “all God’s precious gemstones.” The history of women was beautifully presented by Shirley Coverdale and a beautiful sermon was given by Pastor Cynthia Liggon. To show their gratitude, the men of FBC honored the women by preparing a beautiful luncheon for all to enjoy. Thanks to co-chairperson Mary Miles and Kimberly Ligon for all their hard work in making it a truly wonderful, evangelical event.

Congratulations to Ann Cotten-DeGrasse and Greg Meyer on their re-election to the Riverhead Board of Education and to newly elected member Kim Ligon, who starts her term on July 1, 2011. Best of luck to all of you.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 30. Be sure to take a moment to remember the men and women who have died for our country serving in the armed forces. May we always be thankful for their unselfish gift of life so that we may live in the greatest country ever.

The annual Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. at the corner of Pulaski Street and Osborne Avenue.

The News-Review office will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, therefore there is an early deadline for the June 2 issue. Please send me any information for that issue by tonight, Thursday, May 26.
