Riverhead: Special Ed PTA charter meeting June 15

Roger McCabe was honored by the Riverhead Lions Club June 6 at Digger O’Dell’s for his 46 years of service. Roger was past president and chair of the blind and sighted committee, from which he instituted the Thanksgiving Dinner; of the 30th and 35th anniversaries of the club; and of the bell-ringing committee. He also does the invocations at public events and serves as the club’s chaplain. Congratulations on this accomplishment and may you enjoy many more years of your lifelong membership!

A special memorial get-together for Leona Yousik will be held at the Elks Lodge on Sunday, June 12, at 1:30 p.m. Come look through the many volumes of picture albums — who knows, you may find yourself in a picture with Leona, Be sure to stop by and say hello to Janice Welsh and the others and enjoy the memories of a special lady.

Riverhead Key Club students Rachel Flannery, Josh Bieling, Paige Graziano, Sam Gao, Melissa Kujawski, Max Tuthill, Paulina Dudojc, D’Aja Mitchner, Darneisha Wilkins and Kailyn Gill enjoyed an evening of fun when they went to the Riverhead Care Center on June 1 to have a “senior” prom party with all the residents. The theme was “Under the Sea,” and the center was nicely decorated with fish, palm trees, Hawaiian leis and beach balls. Prom queen Marjorie Fischer and prom king Seamon Keleski were surrounded by their court: William Stokfa, Lillian James, Barbara Bates, Nicholas Merurio, Julia Sobel, Martha Mailander, James Tuite and Sophie Kander. Everyone danced to “Cotton-Eyed Joe,” “YMCA,” “The Twist,” “Chicken Dance” and the “Cha Cha Slide.”

The Glenwood Lassies have a long tradition of making annual donations to volunteer organizations. At a June 1 wine and cheese party Claire Maffel, president, presented donations to Chief Nick Luparella of Riverhead Fire Department; Joseph Oliver, EMT with the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps; Denise Boeckel, for the Cleary School for the Deaf; Denise Schwarz, for the Make A Wish Foundation; and Christine Machine, for East End Hospice. On June 4, the Lassies hosted a strawberry waffle breakfast, which included a 50/50 raffle and a chinese auction. The event was a success. Funds raised will go toward various organizations.

On Wednesday, June 15, there will be a Special Education Parent Teacher Association meeting at Riverhead Free Library at 7 p.m. Dawn Bozuhoski welcomes you to this charter meeting to recognize SEPTA. Please attend if interested, as 25 attendees are required in order to establish the association, which will be a huge gain for the special education community in Riverhead. Hope to see you there.
