Update: Police find body of man missing in L.I. Sound

Police have found the body of the 35-year-old man who went missing in the Long Island Sound in Wading River Friday night after he attempted to save a family member in distress.

The body of Edwin Barahona of Bellport, which is being examined by Suffolk County Police detectives, was found about 100 yards west of the jetty about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Barhona had noticed a 1o-year-old male family member struggling in the water just east of the creek and went in to try to rescue him about 9 p.m. Friday night, according to Riverhead Police Lieutenant Dave Lessard. The child was able to get out of the water safely but the man has not been seen since, according to Lt. Lessard.

The Mattituck, Rocky Point, Sound Beach, Miller Place, Riverhead, Ridge, Wading River and Mt Sinai fire departments all reportedly had dive teams on the scene.

A Coast Guard helicopter had also joined the search, which was called off about 11 p.m. Friday night.
