Photos: ‘Ponding’ plagues Riverhead roads Thursday
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for all of Suffolk County Thursday afternoon. The warning was in effect until 4 p.m. as rainfall rates of up to 1 1/2 inches per hour fell over the region.
“This will cause ponding on roadways,” the advisory read.
As predicted, the rain stopped about 4 p.m., but experts said it could continue again after 8 p.m.
The Weather Service warns drivers to avoid flooded roadways and seek alternatives route when necessary during such heavy precipitation.
There’s a 30 percent chance of rain Friday. Morning showers are possible Saturday before giving way to sunshine over the weekend, officials said.
