Teen struck while riding bicycle in Flanders

A 13-year-old boy was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle westbound in the crosswalk on Flanders Road near County Road 105 in Flanders late Saturday night, Southampton Town Police said.

The boy, identified by family members as Rashad Jackson, was attempting to cross the Southbound Lane of County Road 105 at around 10:15 p.m. when he was struck by a Chevy pickup truck, police said.

Rashad, a student at Riverhead Middle School, was said by police to have sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the truck was identified as John Hatton, age 55, of Babylon.

Dozens of well wishers posted supportive messages on Rashad’s Facebook page Sunday afternoon.

“Rashad, you’re so strong. Hang in there buddy. I’m praying for you,” wrote one poster. “[You’re] one of the best kids alive I love and miss you and I know you will get through this,” wrote another.

Southampton Police have impounded the truck for a safety check as they continue an investigation into the crash.
