Riverhead: Teens invited to sign up as summer hospital volunteers; softball team reunion in September

Roanoke Avenue Elementary School’s Star Garden was the backdrop June 16 for Riverhead Garden Club’s award ceremony with the Girl Scout troops they have been working with all year. Thanks to a Townscape grant, the garden’s infrastructure was recently rebuilt. The Garden ladies and Girl Scouts planted perennials and annuals in the new diamonds, then rewarded themselves with a little reception, at which the girls received certificates and pins for their completion of two units in the Junior Master Gardener program. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Connie Lague on June 29, with lots of love from your son, Jonathan.

Happy birthday to Harry Smith (who turns a handsome 92), Nancy Gassert, Sue Cheshire, Bunny Swiatocha and twin sisters Barbara Kincaid and Beverly Flynn, July 8; Connie Kwasna and Sydney Coalson, July 9; Ray Jennings, July 11; Andre Kosianowski and Erik Boyle, July 12; and Jeremy Carey, who turns 6, July 13. Be sure to celebrate.

Happy wedding anniversary to John and June Behr. Wishes for a happy 50th go to Gen and Bernie Hettrick, with lots of love from your children and grandchildren, who also send lots of hugs and kisses “to the best parents and grandparents in the world!” on July 7. And, finally, anniversary wishes are sent to Laurie and Kevin Zanieski on July 10. Hope your day is extra special.

A free feline spay/neuter clinic, sponsored by SAVES, will be held Sunday, July 10, in the Petco parking lot. Cats can be dropped off at 9 a.m. You will receive a call for pickup. A $25 refundable deposit is required and will be returned the morning of the clinic. Call 722-0015 to reserve your space.

Become a summer volunteer at Peconic Bay Medical Center. Young adults ages 14 to 17 (working papers required) can experience rewards of volunteer service. Choose a session that works for you. Session one: Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 22. Session two: Monday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 19. Both sessions are five hours a day. Contact Lynn LaGrua at 631-548-6021. A parent or guardian must attend the interview with the junior volunteer. What a great way to do community service while meeting new friends and having fun, too.

A reunion is being planned for former members of Roy Mack’s Blockbusters and Masonettes softball team, Saturday, Sept. 3, at Stotzky Park. Email Dorothy Lewis at [email protected]. Spread the word!

Congratulations to ex-Captain Harold “Smokey” Schaefer for his 70 years of dedicated service with Riverhead Fire Department’s Ever Ready Engine Co. No. 3; firefighter Myron “Corky” Young, 38 years; and firefighter Ron Caffrey, 34 years. Thanks to all the men and women who serve our community in the fire service.

And congratulations to Njoki Kamuiru of Milwaukee, Wisc., granddaughter of Beatrice Ash of Riverhead, who graduated on May 21 from Valparaiso (Ind.) University School of Law with a juris doctor degree. She is now studying for the bar at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Njoki’s mother, the late Denise Ash Kamuiru, graduated from Riverhead High School in 1970; her father is Stephen Kamuiru of Milwaukee.

Well, these are the lazy, hazy days of summer. Enjoy the beaches and all that Riverhead has to offer.
