Allen Smith Jr.

Riverhead resident Allen Smith Jr., known as “Smitty,” died May 31 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 77.

He was born Sept. 1, 1933, in East Moriches to Allen and Victoria Towne Smith. He attended the Baiting Hollow school system, then moved to Riverhead and matriculated in the town’s school district.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. military for four years, after which he married Leenell Jackson.

He worked for Hill’s Supermarket and later for Segal Bag Factory, and was the owner/operator of a commercial vehicle. He was employed at Riverhead Town Hall until his retirement at age 62.

Mr. Smith volunteered in the Disabled American Veterans Program, transporting veterans to and from Northport VA Hospital. He also worked with his wife cleaning Suffolk County National Banks in several locations.

Family members said he was their backbone, always eager to help them in any way. He loved to fish, do yard work, fix old cars and play cards with family members, they said, and would always speak his mind, despite the consequences.

He is survived by his wife; his mother; his sons, Wayne and Michael, of Riverhead, and Barry and Ronald, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his daughters, Anna, of Riverhead, Renee Smith-Moore of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Angela Burrough of Fort Lauderdale; his brother, Freddie, of Riverhead; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were in the care of Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead. A service took place June 7 at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, with the Rev. Dr. Roy L. Pennon Sr. officiating. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
