Shoreham-Wading River: SWR Community Band presents “Music by the Ponds” concert series

We have to thank Mother Nature for some nice weekends lately. It’s been sunny and warm with some humidity thrown in, but for the most part it’s been great summer weather for all of our summer activities.

For instance, if you come to Wading River Congregational Church on a Saturday night this month, you’ll enjoy a great performance that is now a Wading River tradition. At 7 p.m. each week the Shoreham-Wading River Community Band will present its “Music by the Ponds” concert series. These concerts are sponsored by SWR Community Programs and the band is a large group of talented musicians from Shoreham and Wading River who invest their time and talent to entertain you. A free-will offering will be taken up, but there is no cost for admission. Wading River Congregational Church’s summer youth ministry members will be selling refreshments. Bring blankets or lawn chairs, and as long as the group has light in which to play, you will enjoy the sounds of summer against the backdrop of the wildlife on the ponds in beautiful downtown Wading River.

Athletes from Shoreham-Wading River who have had sizzling-hot performances in their sports have been named Newsday’s All-Long Island picks. Congratulations to SWR pitcher/shortstop Michael O’Reilly and Ryan McAlary for baseball and to Tim Rotanz for boys’ lacrosse. All Long Island is a huge honor; the best of everything is wished for these senior athletes as they continue their sports careers in college.

The CYO Long Island Basketball Championship is under way and the Shoreham-Wading River seventh-grade team is in contention for the title. Not enough can be said about these young boys, who have been coached by Long Island Basketball Hall of Fame member Jack Agostino. The team members are captain Matty Julian, Christopher Sheehan, Chris Gray, Tom Houlihan, Danny Cassidy, Kyle Higgins, Jalen Wright, Kevin Cutinella, Ryan Heeter, Dean Stalzer, Brian Morrell and Steve Pirani. Their current coaches are Brian Sheehan and Mike Julian, assisted by Mikey Sheehan and Mike Julian Jr. The SWR community is rooting for you and wishes you the best of luck and health as you head for the top.

Be well until we meet here again next week.
