Baseball: LaPointe’s 8 RBI not enough against Tomcats

The Riverhead Tomcats produced 24 hits as they swept an Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader from the Sag Harbor Whalers, 6-5 and 11-8, on Thursday.

Keith Herring homered and Alex Gouin knocked in two runs for the Tomcats in the opener in Riverhead. Eric Romano, Adam Michel, Jim Luppens and Frank Schwindel added two hits apiece, according to www.hamptonsbaseball.org.

Nate LaPointe had eight runs batted in and three home runs for the Whalers (16-17) in the doubleheader, five of them coming in the nightcap when he homered twice.

But the Tomcats (15-20) brought too much firepower of their own. Luppens homered, doubled, knocked in four runs and scored twice in that game. Eric Schlitter drove in two runs and Michel went 3 for 4 with a walk and an RBI.
