Wading River fire guts home; firefighter treated at hospital

Fire swept through a Wading River house Sunday afternoon, gutting it.

Firefighters from Wading River, Riverhead and Rocky Point departments responded to the 3 p.m. call at 39 Hill Street, officials said.

One Wading River firefighter was transported to an area hospital for chest pains brought on by heat exhaustion, said Wading River Fire Department chief Kevin McQueeny. The firefighter left the hospital Sunday night and was “resting and recovering,” Mr. McQueeny said.

“There was quite a lot of damage,” said Rocky Point fire chief Kenny Staufer. “When we left, I don’t think it was liveable.”

More than 60 firefighters from the three departments responded and Wading River firefighters were still on the scene as long as two hours later Sunday, officials said. The cause of the fire had yet to be determined as of Wednesday.

Mr. McQueeny said the homeowners were not at home at the time of the blaze and have since been staying with relatives in the area.
