Art Beat: Outsider art on display at Greenport brewery

• Collectors of local art are invited to participate in the East End Arts Council’s juried ‘Red Dot’ show, which will open Sept. 2 at the Riverhead gallery. Art lovers who have bought the work of living Long Island artists may enter one piece from their collections, with entries to be accepted on Aug. 25, 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the gallery.

The exhibit will be juried by arts journalist, author, professor and curator Dr. Charles Riley II. He will award best in show to both collector and artist for the piece he finds to be the “most amazing collecting coup in the exhibit,” according to a press release.

The collector will win dinner for two at Jamesport Manor Inn and a year’s membership in EEAC, Parrish Art Museum and Guild Hall. The winning artist will have a solo show at Jamesport Manor Inn’s Rosalie Dimon Gallery. Entry guidelines can be found at eastendarts.org. under Call for Artists. • Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is hosting the second annual ‘Un-Hamptons Outsider Art Exhibit, North Fork Edition’ through Aug. 28. Featured artists are Jim Bloom, Candyce Brokaw, Susan Brown, David Ellis, Garance, Gary Brent Hilsen, Mark May, John Van Orsouw and Harald Olson. The exhibit includes works on paper, acrylics, mixed media, metal and sculpture.

The show’s theme is self-taught, visionary, folk and outsider art. It is a collaborative effort with the nonprofit organizations Fountain Gallery and Pure Vision Arts, both of New York City, and Survivors Art Foundation of Quogue.

• East End Arts Council’s Third Thursday Series offering for August will be “Oh Say Can You See What I See,” a presentation by Greenport gallery owner Hector deCordova, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Brecknock Hall in Greenport.

Mr. deCordova, owner of a Greenport gallery, will facilitate a discussion on the collaborative process between artist and viewer and what perspective a viewer might bring to a work of art.

• Artist Don Wilson will give a reverse glass painting demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Studio East in Greenport. Mr. Wilson, who has completed 12 Long Island lighthouses and other scenes on glass windows, is one of gallery’s featured artists this month. A new exhibit opens there with a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.

• Old Town Art and Crafts Guild in Cutchogue is accepting entries for its 2011 Young Artist Contest. Youngsters ages 5 to 15 may enter one original drawing or painting, no larger than 9 inches by 12 inches, with judging in three age groups. Art must be submitted (with name, age, address, telephone number and optional title on back) by Aug. 26, brought to the Main Road guild or mailed to The Old Town Art and Crafts Guild, P.O. Box 392, Cutchogue 11935.

• Entries are sought for the Downtown Riverhead Summer Photo Contest 2011, a free online competition. Photos of the downtown area — the river, Main Street, the neighborhoods, people and events — can be downloaded at flickr.com/groups/2011downtown­riverheadcontest. Submissions should be photos taken between Memorial Day and Labor Day; the deadline is Sept. 15. Winning photos will be exhibited at Riverhead Free Library.

• The Laurel Group at Baywoods in Water Mill announces a new exhibit of paintings by Charles Wildbank of Jamesport. “HADO: Waves of Consciousness” opens with a reception on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. and runs through Aug. 25. In this show, the artist moves from his signature hyper-realist still lifes to embrace “a more profound perspective,” according to a release.
