Girls Basketball: Longwood tops SWR for summer league title

The Longwood girls basketball team defeated Shoreham-Wading River 30-24 Wednesday night at St. Joseph’s College to win the overall varsity championship in the Town of Brookhaven Summer League.

The Lions went 7-2 in the large school division before winning all four playoff games. On Monday Longwood won 38-35 against Sachem East for the large school championship.

The Wildcats also went 7-2 in the small school division. They clinched the small school championship with a win over Southampton Aug. 3. With eight minutes left the Wildcats trailed 29-24. With 1:55 left Cari Gostic hit a pair of free throws with a taped up jammed finger she dealt with all game. The Wildcats gained the lead at 31-30 on a 12-foot jumper by Alyssa Fleming off a feed from Meghan King, who extended the lead to three when she hit two free throws with 32 seconds left. Jess Angerman helped ice the game with two free throws with eight seconds left.
