Route 58 Capital One bank branch robbed by fedora-clad man

A Capital One bank branch on Route 58 in Riverhead was robbed Friday morning, town officials said, and at last report the robber was still at large.

VERA CHINESE PHOTO | It was business as usual Friday after a morning robbery at Capital One.

Supervisor Sean Walter said the robber was unarmed, and that police are investigating the theft of an “undisclosed sum of money” from the branch in the TJ Maxx shopping center.

“I didn’t hear anything until I saw the [police] cars,” said a clerk at next-door GameStop, a video game store.

Bank staffers wouldn’t comment.

Police described the robber as  a white or hispanic man wearing a light colored fedora, a white button down shirt with a collar, white shorts and white sneakers.

He approached a teller at the bank at 11:51 a.m. and produced a note demanding money, police said. He was given an undetermined amount of cash and fled on foot in an unknown direction, police reported.
