Aquebogue-Jamesport: Civic meeting, antique show, 10K run

Our condolences to the members of Jamesport Fire Department and the friends and families of recently deceased JFD members, Edward Collins and Anthony Zaweski. We are grateful for the years of service both of these men provided to our local community through JFD. Their presence in this community will be missed.

I received a notice from Angela DeVito regarding the next Jamesport-South Jamesport Civic Association meeting. It will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9:30 a.m. The focus will be on the outcomes of our meeting with Supervisor Walter, changes to the bylaws and fall fundraising. The meeting will be held at Angela’s house, 121 Green Street, South Jamesport. Kindly bring a chair, as seating is limited. If the weather is pleasant, the meeting will be held in the backyard. Bagels, coffee, tea, juice and fresh fruit will be served. The meeting will adjourn promptly at 11 a.m. If you have an agenda item, email Angela at [email protected] to add it to the proposed agenda.

Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue will be holding its 35th annual Antique Show and Sale on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (rain date: Monday, Sept. 5). The donation is $6 per person; children under 12 are free. Over 65 dealers will be on site. Lunch, baked goods, and vegetables will also be available for sale in the church’s fellowship hall. I have only lived here for 12 years, but this antique show is the traditional end-of-summer event for me. Come out and enjoy the community flavor as you browse and buy antiques and food.

There are only a few more days to preregister for the JFD Sound to Bay 10K Run, to be held on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 9 a.m. It is a beautiful course, running from Iron Pier to South Jamesport Beach. Check out the newly updated website, jfd10krun.com, or friend them on Facebook for more information and to see great pictures from last year’s 10K. You can still preregister for $20 by contacting Robert Sikora at 807-4055 or [email protected] before Aug. 22. The proceeds of the race help support JFD and its associated community outreaches, programs and activities. A portion of the proceeds provide for the needs of our local youth, community families that have fallen on hard times, education scholarships, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center and the NYS Volunteer Firemen’s Home.

Can you believe it is the middle of August already? My sunflowers are just beginning to bloom. We had a lot of fun celebrating Johanna’s birthday last week. I decided that next spring, Johanna and I will start all our seeds indoors and plant by Mother’s Day. Then we will have sunflowers in July and August! I wish summer didn’t have to end and the kids didn’t have to go back to school. Enjoy the summer and the family fun; savor the time and the sunshine!
