Shoreham-Wading River: Astoria Federal Savings hosts school supply and donation drive through Aug. 29

August is the time for our thoughts to turn to heading back to school. For some people in this economy, that is a real worry because they don’t have the money to purchase the supplies to equip their children with the essentials. When children have to reuse notebooks from last year, for instance, it can be a blow to their self-esteem and it can affect their performance in school. So Astoria Federal Savings is having a school supply or donation drive to help children at risk. Over the past 12 years, the bank has collected over 10 tons of school supplies for “Kids Tools For School.”

If you would like to take part in this challenge, drop off new school supplies or a cash/check donation at Astoria Federal Savings on Route 25A in Wading River. Donations will be accepted through Aug. 29. There is a need for pencils, notebooks, memo pads, ballpoint pens, round-edged scissors, glue, rulers, crayons, loose-leaf paper, pencil sharpeners or money. One hundred percent of what you donate will go to the children. If you want to donate by check, send it to Kids Tools For School Drive, Astoria Federal Savings, One Astoria Federal Plaza, Lake Success, NY 11042-1085. Astoria Federal will also match up to $10,000 in donations, which doubles the effort for the kids.

Wading River Fire Department has a fund drive in progress, and members want to thank you for your donations. It’s so important to support them because they rely on our generosity to run the whole volunteer organization. They are also advertising that they are in need of local heroes: fire and EMS volunteers. The benefits of joining are great; you will receive free training, your taxes will not increase because it’s a volunteer organization, you gain knowledge and valuable experience, and you’ll have property tax relief, get pension benefits and be eligible for career opportunities. Won’t you lend a helping hand by giving them a call at 631-929-8782? It will be the most enriching experience you’ll know.

Our seniors from Shoreham-Wading River High School will be starting fresh soon, so we want to wish them luck as they head off into the future. Some will go to college far away, some will continue their studies locally, some will enter the military and others will enter the job market. Whatever you choose, good luck to all our graduating Class of 2011.

Be well until we meet here again next week!
