Slide Show: Stop the Violence basketball tournament

The 6th annual Stop the Violence basketball tournament was held Sunday at the Riverhead Town basketball courts on Horton Avenue. Ten teams of 12 players from across the tri-state area have battled it out at the event each years.

The annual tournament began as a grassroots effort by residents seeking to help others avoid gang violence.

The event’s creator, Riverhead resident Dwayne Eleazer, said he’s pleased town and community support has grown over the years.

“We’re trying to keep [young people] off the street,” Mr. Eleazer said, adding that each participant wore a T-shirt listing the names of Riverhead murder victims. “We don’t want to add anymore names,” he said. “We don’t have any more room to add any more names.”
