Shoreham-Wading River: Fundraising continues for 9/11 Memorial Fund

The next meeting of the Shoreham Civic Organization will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Miller Avenue Elementary School. The guest speaker will be Dr. Steven Cohen, superintendent of Shoreham-Wading River School District.

SCO welcomes anyone who lives in the Shoreham community (zip code 11786) or Leisure Glen to join. However, all members and guests interested in the quality of life in our community are always invited to attend. Meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of each month. Meeting information is available online at shorehamcivic.com.

You have to be able to trust the person making your breakfast. After all, they know you personally — what type of bagel you prefer, if you’re an “egg whites on toast” person or if you prefer your bagel plain or toasted with butter. I know an owner who hangs a sign in his shop that says, “Be kind to the cook, he’s making your eggs.” I wanted to give a shout out to Meena, Suzy and “L” from Bagel Buddies in Wading River, who take the time to serve so many of us on line so early in the day. You’re one of the first people we encounter each morning and it’s nice to know that we’re “in good hands.” May your tip jar be always overflowing with bills of large denominations.

There is now a beautiful and touching addition to the landscape of Rocky Point Fire Department’s Shoreham Fire Company No. 3 station, on Route 25A next to Tesla Street. It is the 9/11 Memorial, dedicated on Sunday. It features lovely plantings, benches on a walkway and a brick path circling a reflecting pool that supports an illuminated beam from the twisted wreckage of the World Trade Center. This is all in front of a wall that will bear the names of those lost on that fateful day. And, just beyond the flagpoles, there is a rock with a smaller piece of a beam, illuminated in red, that lists the names of those who perished that day who are known to us: Rocky Point graduates Sgt. Michael Curtin, Joanne Ahladiotis, sisters Lisa and Samantha Egan and Shoreham-Wading River graduate Kevin Williams. It is open to the public to stop by any time for moments of prayer or reflection. The fundraising on this project is not yet complete, so you may still purchase a brick for $100, which will give you three lines, 14 letters per line. Send a check to 9-11 Memorial Fund, Box 702, Shoreham, NY 11786, call 744-7155 or go online at [email protected].

See you here again next week.
