Helen E. Simchick

Helen E. Simchick of Cutchogue died on September 8, 2011. She was 98 years old.

She was born in Aquebogue, N.Y., on May 23, 1913, to John and Josephine Rutkowski and on November 19, 1933, she married Stanley Simchick at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church in Cutchogue.

Helen was a devoted homemaker and farmer’s wife and an active member of the community. She had been a District 4H Leader, a member of the Mattituck and Jamesport Homemakers and a member of the Cutchogue Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she worked on the first-ever chicken BBQ and she made shortcakes for the very first Strawberry Festival in Mattituck. She also enjoyed crocheting and made hundreds of blankets for the premature babies at Stony Brook University Hospital.

She was also a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama Parish in Cutchogue, a charter member of the Marian Council of Columbiettes and a member of the Rosary and Sacred Heart Altar Societies.

Predeceased on March 17, 2001, by her husband of 67 years, Stanley, she is survived by her daughter, Josephine H. Perry and her husband, Gerald, of Mastic; a sister, Bertha Bokina, and brother, Henry Rutkoski, both of Mattituck; a grandson, Steven Perry and his wife, Denise, of Niskayuna, N.Y.; and two great-grandsons, Shane and Cole Perry. She was predeceased by siblings Stanley Rutkowski, Josephine Gevinski, Anne Dixon, Mary Kaider, Jean Hauck, John Rutkoski and Edward Rutkoski.

The family received friends on Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where parish prayers were offered and members of the Columbiettes and Sacred Heart Rosary Society conducted services. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
