A man who barricaded himself in his Riverhead home and threatened to shoot himself and police officers surrendered peacefully to police Tuesday afternoon after a more than 3-hour standoff, authorities said.

Zdsislaw Skobodzinski, 36, of Segal Avenue in Riverhead, became involved in a heated dispute with his live-in girlfriend, Agnieszka Matuszczyk, 26, of the same address, just after 10 a.m. He threatened to shoot officers who were responding to the 911 call, according to police, who said Mr. Skobodzinski then barricaded himself in the house.

Officers were able to get Ms. Matuszczyk and her 6-year-old son out of the house while Mr. Skobodzinski stayed inside and continued with his threats, police said.

Traffic was closed on East Main Street from Elton Avenue to an area just north of the Millbrook Gables neighborhood, and several neighboring homes were evacuated during the ordeal.

The Suffolk County Police sent it’s Emergency Services Unit and a hostage negotiation team to the scene, police said.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., Mr. Skobodzinski surrendered to police without incident, and was taken into custody. He was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration. An unloaded 12-gauge double barrel shotgun was recovered in the home, police said.
