Aquebogue-Jamesport: Honoring animals this weekend

Tuesday, Oct. 4, is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In honor of the patron saint of animals, there are a few animal-focused events going on locally this weekend. This Saturday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m., Old Steeple Church in Aquebogue will hold a “Blessing and Celebration of the Animals” service. It’s open to pets of all types — and their owners, of course. Coffee, tea and cookies will be available in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Freewill offerings will be accepted and will be given to a local animal shelter. For more information, contact Janet Wright at 516-527-0026 or [email protected].

A ‘Blessing of the Animals’ will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. Contact Nancy Deegan at 298-8304 or [email protected]. We went to that blessing last year with our three dogs and had a great time. We couldn’t convince the cats to come as they had other more important things to do. Animals bless our lives in many ways, so why not attend one of these blessings with your furry friends?

On Oct. 4, I will be giving a talk entitled “Rebuild My Church” at 7:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River. Open to all women of faith. Call or email me for further details.

Aquebogue School’s annual fall craft fair will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair and raffles will showcase local artisans, friends and families from all over who handcraft their items. It is amazing to see the variety of gifts and talents from so many people on display for us to purchase. Proceeds from the fair will benefit the Aquebogue School PTA. For more information or to rent a vendor table, call Tabatha at 631-998-3043.

The Spiritual Renewal Center is hosting its third annual “Blessing of the Artists” Saturday, Oct. 8, from noon to 4:30 p.m. This is not a religious service but an opportunity for community members to appreciate the creations of local artists and the many contributions art brings to our lives. All artists are welcomed to be blessed at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary. From noon to 4:30 p.m. featured artwork will also be on display at The Grange across from First Parish Church. Refreshments will be served. If you would like to show your artwork at The Grange contact Mary Ann Suozzi at [email protected] or 631-905-1614.

The race is on! Jamesport Fire Department’s 10K race has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Jamesport Town Beach; race begins at 9 a.m. at Iron Pier. Preregistration is $20; $25 on day of race. Visit jfd10krun.com or email Robert Sikora at [email protected] for more information.
