Carnell Odell Evans died Sept. 13 at his home in Riverhead. He was 70 years old.
He was born in Greenport on April 30, 1941, to Carnell and Minnie (Gray) Evans and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1958. He then attended Rochester Institute of Technology, graduating with a a mechanical engineering degree.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Mr. Evans worked until his retirement for the Grumman Engineering Corporation. He was also a volunteer ambulance driver in Riverhead for 31 years and a lifelong member of Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck. Family members said he was a dedicated uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Evans is survived by a sister, Marian Nickens of Riverhead, and two brothers, Earl, of East Hampton, and Roscoe, of Powhatan, Va.
Services were held Sept. 21 at Riverhead Church of Christ, Minister Richard Jackson officiating. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Seay Memorial Chapel, Riverhead.
