Riverhead Town Police have identified the three people involved in a two-car crash in Calverton Sunday.

Richard Matheson, 58, and his wife Jacqueline, 55, of Hauppauge were traveling west in a 2010 Jeep Laredo on Route 25 about 10:40 a.m. when they were hit head-on by the 2010 Jeep Liberty driven by 19-year-old Emily Bongiorno of Mount Sinai, police said. Ms. Bongiorno was driving east when she crossed over the double yellow line and hit the couple head-on just east of Edwards Avenue, according to police.

Riverhead Fire Department volunteers spent more than a half hour trying to remove Mr. Matheson from the SUV by using the jaws of life tool, fire department officials said. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.

Ms. Matheson and Ms. Bongiorno were taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of “non-life threatening injuries,” police said.

A portion of Route 25 was closed following the crash and eastbound traffic was diverted to Edwards Avenue. The road was reopened as of 1 p.m.

The Wading River Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The accident is still under investigation and police and witnesses are asked to call investigators at 727-4500 x321.
