Today in sports: Regular season winding down in tennis

BOB LIEPA FILE PHOTO | Alex Quintana played fourth singles in a match against Mattituck earlier this season.

League VIII is girls tennis appears to be comfortably in the hands of Mattituck. The Tuckers, at 9-0, have won every match by 7-0 or 6-1 scores. A win Thursday against Southold/Greenport would clinch at least a share of the league title for Mattituck.

That leaves a three-way race for second place, with Eastport-South Manor, Shoreham-Wading River and Riverhead.

The Blue Waves and Wildcats will face each other this afternoon at Shoreham-Wading River High School for the second meeting between the teams. Riverhead won the first match Sept. 13, 4-3.

The Wildcats come into today at 7-2 in League VIII while the Blue Waves are 7-3. Eastport is also 7-2.

In League VII, the upper division of Conference IV, the McGann-Mercy Monarchs are 5-2. They’ll host the league leader Westhampton at 4 p.m. The Hurricanes are 7-0 in league and won 5-2 against the Monarchs in their first meeting.

The regular season in girls tennis wraps up next week and then the individual division championships begin Oct. 14.
