Accident causes traffic mess in Calverton, Baiting Hollow

JENNIFER GUSTAVSON PHOTO | A downed utility pole stalled traffic for several hours in Calverton and Baiting Hollow Wednesday morning.

A single-car accident in Calverton stalled traffic for several hours Wednesday morning.

The car, which police officers on the scene said slammed into a utility pole about 5:15 a.m., had been removed from the road by 9:30 a.m., though traffic was still being diverted to Route 25 from Sound Avenue via Fresh Pond Road.

Riverhead Town Police were searching for the driver of the car, who allegedly fled the scene.

Sound Avenue from Route 25A to Edwards Avenue was closed due to downed wires.

Route 25 traffic was at a near stand still from the intersection with Route 25A until Edwards Avenue.
