Today in sports: Cross country runners take on Cardiac Hill

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Riverhead's Anthony Galvan is one of the runners expected to hit Cardiac Hill in the division championships today at Sunken Meadow State Park.

It’s called Cardiac Hill, and for good reason.

Cardiac Hill, the outstanding feature of Sunken Meadow State Park’s 3.2-mile course, is a big reason why the Kings Park course is regarded as one of the most difficult cross-country courses in the nation.

Runners will be tested by Cardiac Hill and Sunken Meadow today in the division championships. The championship boys and girls races will start the action at 1:30 p.m. and 1:55 p.m., respectively. They will be followed by the boys and girls team qualifier races at 2:25 p.m. and 2:50 p.m., and then the boys and girls individual qualifier races at 3:20 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.

Runners from Riverhead, Shoreham-Wading River, Mattituck and Southold are expected to be in the field.

Sunken Meadow will also be the site of the Section XI Championships on Nov. 4.
