Today in sports: SWR girls volleyball faces local rival

Most years, a Shoreham-Wading River-Miller Place girls volleyball match would be a critical league game. While the Wildcats moved down this season to League VII, they’ll still get a chance to take on their local rivals to the west when they travel to Miller Place for a 5 p.m. match today.

The Wildcats came into yesterday riding a three-game win streak. They posted shutout wins over Southampton and Babylon and defeated Mattituck 3-1 Oct. 11.

But the win streak came to an end last night when Hampton Bays blanked the Wildcats in three games. The Wildcats fell to 6-4 in League VII and 7-5 overall.

Miller Place has had its struggles in a very competitive League VI. The Panthers are 4-8 in a league that features some heavy hitters like John Glenn, Sayville, East Hampton and Westhampton.

With six wins already, the Wildcats have assured themselves a spot in the Class B playoffs.
