Today in Sports: SWR travels to No. 1 Sayville in semifinals

Coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Westhampton in the first round of the Class A playoffs, the Shoreham-Wading River boys soccer team heads to Sayville this afternoon to face the No. 1 seed in the bracket.

The Wildcats trailed twice against the Hurricanes before scoring the game-winner in overtime. The win was the first postseason victory for Shoreham head coach Andrew Moschetti since taking over the boys program in 2009.

The Wildcats face a huge challenge today against a team that won the state championship a year ago. The Golden Flashes are 13-2-1 coming into today. Sayville went undefeated playing in League V. The two teams did not meet in the regular season.

Because Sayville earned a bye into the semifinals, the team hasn’t played a game in nearly two weeks. That could work to Shoreham’s advantage early on in if the Golden Flashes come out a little rusty.

Nine of Sayville’s wins have been by more than one goal. The good news is teams have scored against the Flashes this season. Last year in their run to the state championship, the Flashes gave up four goals combined all season.

The winner of today’s game advances to play either No. 2 East Hampton or No. 3 John Glenn in the county finals. Today’s game starts at 2 p.m.
