Cyber attack disrupted Cablevision online services Tuesday night

Cablevision customers experienced disruptions in their Optimum Online internet service between about 6 p.m  and midnight Tuesday when services returned to normal, according to a press release issued by Cablevision Systems Corporation.

The attack impacted the ability of some customers on the East End to access certain websites and other Internet services, officials said.

The disruption, representatives said, was caused by what’s called a DDoS attack, or Distributed Denial of Service, where the attacker overloads a network with data.

Cablevision is currently investigating the cause of the attack.
