Riverhead High School evacuated after small paper fire

TIM GANNON PHOTO | Riverhead High School was evacuated today after someone lit paper on fire in a school hallway.

Riverhead High School was briefly evacuated today after a piece of paper was lit on fire in one of the school’s hallways, according to authorities.

No one was injured during the evacuation which occurred shortly before 2:15 p.m.

Riverhead School Superintendent Nancy Carney said a flyer the size of a piece of loose leaf that was on a bulletin board in the hallway was ignited. The flyer extinguished by itself and did not ignite anything else, but the smoke was enough to set off the fire alarm.

She said the district is examining security camera footage to see if they can find a culprit.

The school was evacuated but classes were already dismissed by that time.

Students were let back in the building by 2:35 p.m. The last period of the school day is over at 2:04 p.m.

Volunteers with the Riverhead Fire Department were on the scene during the incident.
