Former Riverhead resident Bernadette M. Nichols of Lusby, Md., died Dec. 30, 2011, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Md. She was 82.
She was born March 25, 1929, in Queens to William and Susan (Carracash) McGrory. She married Daniel Nichols on Jan. 8, 1949, and they raised their family in Wantagh. Ms. Nichols worked as a public school librarian.
Family members said she was a devout Catholic who attended church almost daily and was active in Birthright.
Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Nichols is survived by her children, William, of Lusby, Md., Daniel, of Lindenhurst, and Dolores Sarnelle of Longwood, Fla.; a brother, John McGrory of West Hempstead; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her sister, Julia Belcastro, and brothers William and Francis McGrory.
Visiting hours will take place Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R. C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
