John E. Gilligan

John E. Gilligan, recently of Riverhead and formerly of Hampton Bays and Vero Beach, Fla., died Dec. 21, 2011. He was 81.

Born April 20, 1930, in Queens, he served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard and was honorably discharged after the Korean War. He retired from the New York City Police Department after 25 years of service.

He owned Gilligan’s Saloon in Hampton Bays for many years.

Mr. Gilligan is survived by his sons, John, of Palos Verdes, Calif., James, of Northport, Daniel, of Hampton Bays, Martin, of Buena Park, Calif., Kevin, of Land O’ Lakes, Fla., and Matthew, of Sebastian, Fla.; his daughters, Janet Trafford of Riverhead and Margaret Brown of Scotch Plains, N.J.; his sister, Janet Mullen of Massepequa; and 17 grandchildren.

Visiting hours took place Dec. 26 at J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A funeral Mass was held Dec. 27 at St. Rosalie’s R.C. Church in Hampton Bays, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
