Boys Basketball: Blue Waves coast to crucial league win

After a sluggish start, the Riverhead Blue Waves erupted in the second quarter Thursday night by outscoring Centereach 23-5 in a blowout victory at Riverhead High School.

Ten different players scored for the Blue Waves in the 69-45 win, a rare laugher for a team that has played tight games all season.

Senior Tim Clement led all scorers with 14 points for Riverhead. Ryan Bitzer and Reggie Moore both added 11.

The Blue Waves led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.

Riverhead’s defense forced the Cougars into 18 first-half turnovers.

Centereach raced out to a quick 7-1 lead, prompting an early timeout from Riverhead coach John Rossetti. The Cougars led 13-10 after one quarter. The Blue Waves took the lead on an aggressive drive to the basket by Brandon Tolliver to make it 14-13. The Blue Waves led the rest of the way.

The Blue Waves improved to 3-3 in League III at the halfway mark of the league season. If they can equal that mark through the second half the reward would be another trip to the postseason.
