Two injured in early morning crash in Riverside

The Riverhead Fire Department was called to the scene of a one-car accident on Nugent Drive in Riverside just east of the county jail early Saturday morning, and rescuers needed a Hurst tool to remove the vehicle’s door to free a female passenger.

The accident was called in at 1:22 a.m.

According to First Assistant Fire Chief Tony White, the car was heading south on Nugent Drive and struck a tree just east of the jail.

The fire department was called to remove the passenger side door to remove a female passenger, who was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The male driver also was brought to PBMC, according to Chief White, who said the injuries are believed to be non-threatening.

The cause of the accident, which took place before the snow began to fall, was not known. The names of the two occupants of the car were not available.

Southampton Town Police were unable to provide any additional information on the accident.
