Dr. Suess is the featured author as Riverhead kids kick off Reading Week
Roanoke Avenue Elementary School held its Reading Week Kickoff Assembly Friday afternoon, which was the 108th birthday of children’s book giant Dr. Seuss.
Reading teachers Georgette Keller, Corinne Arrasate and literacy coach Tammi Michaelson read aloud ‘The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. Target representatives will be at the school Monday to do Dr., Seuss “Read Alouds” in each of the kindergarten and first grade classes in celebration of “Read Across America”.
Principal Mr. Thomas Payton presented the week schedule to the students and laid out the “Read, Read, Read” challenge for them to log a total of 60,000 reading minutes. Last year the challenge was 50,000 minutes and they reached 72,000.
Mr. Payton let five students throw whipped cream pies in his face.
Next Friday, the theme will be “Curl Up with a Good Book” and students will be allowed to wear pajamas to school. Mr. Payton will have his head shaved by Jermaine Moore of “Platinum Image” who will style a “fade” on the back of his head that will say “READ.”
