Join the L.I. champion Riverhead girls basketball team for a pep rally Thursday

ROBERT O'ROURK FILE PHOTO | A pep rally will be held Thursday morning to see the Riverhead girls basketball team off on their way to the state tournament.

This Friday, the Riverhead Varsity girls basketball team will face off in their first-ever state semifinal game. But before they go, the Riverhead community is organizing one last hometown show of support.

Riverhead High School will host a pep rally Thursday morning just before the team heads off to face Penfield High School in their Final Four state semifinal game in Troy, N.Y.

The pep rally will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last until the girls leave for Troy at 10 a.m.

The girls basketball team has sparked an outpouring of support since they won the Suffolk County Class AA Tournament title for the first time since 1984 by defeating the undefeated Hauppauge High School girls, defeated Southampton High School for the Section XI title and rallied to defeat Baldwin High School to win the Long Island Championship last week.

On Friday at 6:15 p.m., the team will play Penfield HS in the semifinals. You can watch our livestream and up-to-the-minute coverage of the game starting Friday at 6 p.m. on the Riverhead News Review website.
