About 120 first graders pulled their little St. Patrick’s Day Parade floats through the hallways of Riley Avenue Elementary School Friday afternoon as their schoolmates, parents, grandparents and others sat in the gymnasium to cheer them on.

The Calverton school Celebrates the holiday every year with a parade.

Calverton was once nicknamed “Irish Town,” according to town historian Georgette Case. Several Irish farm families, such as the Rileys, Farrells, Hollands, Twomeys, Hogans and Donohues immigrated to Calverton during the Irish potato famine in the mid-1840’s.

A Donohue farm is still in operation with a farmstand on Route 25.
