Monday Morning Briefing: Roads closed today for Coen Brothers movie shoot

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | Crews built a gas station set for today's shoot.

The latest movie from Academy Award-winning directors the Coen Brothers, ”Inside Llewyn Davis,” is filming in Riverhead today.

The film is about a folk singer set mostly in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village in the 1960s, and features big-name Hollywood talent such as John Goodman of the “Big Lebowski” and Justin Timberlake of “The Social Network.”

The movie will shoot at two Riverhead locations made to look like gas stations, at the Riverhead Water District property on Northville Turnpike and Route 105, and at another set just up the road.

The following roads will be closed by police at times today:

Northville Turnpike, between Doctors Path and Sound Avenue 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

County Road 105, between state Route 25 and Sound Avenue 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Union Avenue in Aquebogue, partial closure, no traffic onto County Road 105 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Northville Turnpike between Doctors Path and County Road 105 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

• Having started my career as a sports writer covering high school sports, I’d say I’ve covered close to 1,000 games and I saw something for the first time Friday night in Troy.

As the Riverhead girls basketball team left the court following its 67-49 loss to Penfield in the NYSPHSAA state semifinals the Blue Waves crowd gave the players a standing ovation. In defeat.

Not only did the 250 or so locals who made the eight-hour round trip stand and cheer, they chanted “Riverhead.”

That, my friends, is class.

• Speaking of Friday night’s game, our coverage drew more than 2,000 readers to the site, a great number for a high school sporting event. The video links on our live stream were played back about 1,000 times. It was a fun experiment to broadcast live from the game and we promise to do more of it in the future.

• The River & Roots Community Garden began its second season Saturday morning with a garden bed cleanup.

Plans for the garden this season include painting the outside of the raised beds, and the town plans on installing a playground adjacent to it. There will be a yard sale fundraiser June 2 and 3, location to be announced, and a date will be set in March for a donation day in the garden.

Congratulations on the start of a second season.
