Cops: Riverhead man drove getaway car in bank robbery

A Riverhead man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly drove the getaway vehicle in a Deer Park bank robbery, police said.

Jesse Stewart, 37, of Alders Gate, was charged with third-degree robbery, according to a Suffolk County police report.

Police said Mr. Stewart was the getaway driver for Jean Coughlin, a 45-year-old Bay Shore woman who police said robbed the Chase Bank on Grand Boulevard at 3:22 p.m.

Ms. Coughlin handed the teller a “handwritten note demanding cash and threatening violence,” according to a police report. The teller handed over the cash, but Ms. Coughlin was stopped by a bank customer who held her until police arrived on the scene.

A Third Precinct patrol officer later located Mr. Stewart and arrested him for his role in the robbery, police said.

Ms. Coughlin faces three counts of third-degree robbery for other bank robberies she allegedly committed in Suffolk County this year. Both Ms. Coughlin and Mr. Stewart were held overnight and will be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
