Riverhead firefighters free woman from elevator after fire

Riverhead firefighters responded to an elevator fire at Peconic Bay Medical Center Sunday morning that left one woman trapped for a short time in an elevator.

The department was called to the Riverhead hospital about 6 a.m. and discovered that the elevator’s motor had caught fire and was smoking, shutting down the elevator and trapping its lone occupant inside, according to Riverhead Fire Chief Nick Luparella.

He said the fire had actually burned out on its own by the time firefighters got there.

Firefighters freed the woman from the elevator unharmed.
