Newsday: State says arson to blame for Manorville wildfire

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | Fires burn in the woods off River Road in Calverton during last month's massive wildfire that stretched from Ridge to the Riverhead Town.

State officials are saying arson was the cause of the massive wildfires that burned some 1,100 acres from Ridge to Manorville last month and destroyed at least nine buildings, according to a newsday.com report published Wednesday night.

Three Manorville firefighters were injured in the blaze after being forced to abandon a brush truck that caught fire in the woods.

According to the Newsday report, the state Department of Environmental Conservation found the fire was intentionally set, although officials with the Suffolk County Arson Squad, which is heading the joint investigation, said it’s too early to say if the fire was intentional.
